A woman walks towards Weimer Hall in the rain at the University of Florida campus in Gainesville, Fla. on April 20, 2009. Gainesville Regional Airport had received around three-tenths of an inch of rain as of 6 p.m. Monday, according to the National Weather Service in Jacksonville. The front that brought the rain should move out of the area by this morning.

Basketball Shooting Begins

My first and next-to-last basketball assignment of 2008 was the Florida vs. Georgia Southern game at the O’Connell Center on Dec. 22. It was a little rough at first, but I managed to do okay. I shot with only my Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 lens. I wanted some interesting shots of things that were close that I normally couldn’t do with a telephoto. Then again, you loose some stuff from far away. That’s a disadvantage of having only one camera body.

Here are a few post-vehicle accident photos from Dec. 2 on University Avenue and Buckman Drive near campus. Unfortunately, the accident led to the death of UF student Michael VanWagner after a car struck his scooter.

Playing Catchup

By Charles E. Roop

I has been nearly two months since I have made a blog post. I have been extremely busy these last few weeks. The multimedia editorship at the Alligator has taken a lot of my time and focus, and the same with school. I have a lot of catching up to do in the school front. I hope to make more posts when possible for the remaining four to five weeks left of the semester. Damn, it feels like the term just started.

Here are some of the best photos from the last two months.

Monopoly Record

By Charles E. Roop

Hello, again my fellow readers. Sorry again for waiting another week to blog post. Life is busy for me still, but I hope to make more of an effort to make posts.

The last video I made was posted 11 days ago. It’s about a P.R. club on campus that put on an event to set a record for the amount of people playing the game Monopoly simultaneously.

You can view the video by following the link:

Kal Penn visits UF.

By Charles E. Roop

This was my first Alligator online video that I edited with Final Cut Express 4. It was a little tough at first. However, thanks to Steve, I was able to figure it out and go from there.

Actor Kal Penn (from Harold and Kumar, and House) visited UF to campaign for Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama.

I actually got word back from the University desk that Penn and the Obama organizers liked this video. I felt kind of star struck. If Kal Peen ever reads this, I say “thanks for the comment.”

Since I can not get the video to be embedded (damn you, WordPress), here is the link: Kal Penn Campaigns for Sen. Obama at UF.

Good evening, readers…if there are any left. I apologize that this is my first post in over a week, but life has been a little crammed.

For those who do not know yet, I have been selected to be the Alligator’s multimedia editor (which works with the photo editor). It’s a brand-new position at one of the largest student-run college papers in the nation. I will be dealing with not only photos, but video and other visual multimedia. Fun! So far, so good. I was able to create two videos in the past week (I will post those on the blog momentarily).

So far, the first week of classes for the fall 2008 is going smoothly. I hope it remains that way for the rest of the term. I am taking Advanced Photojournalism 1, so expect some additional photos to be posted.

Roller Derby!

By Charles E. Roop

On Sunday, I finally had an opportunity to do some video. I covered a bout with the Gainesville Roller Rebels at the Alachua County Fairgrounds. The video has been posted on the Alligator’s site as well as on YouTube…

I’m trying to get more video to add to my portfolio since the journalism market is catering to more multimedia. Expect more videos in the future.

ESPN in Town

ESPN came to Gainesville in the scorching heat on Thursday. They were not there to cover a game, but to see if Gainesville should be declared “Titletown.” Gainesville is one of 20 stops that the cable sports network is making to do a taped feature of the city. ESPN reporter and journalism school grad Erin Andrews talked to quarterback Tim Tebow as dozens of fans young and old cheered. Here are a few photos…
